Raven, Henry

Rank : Private

Army Number : 669

Unit : 2nd Bn

Biography :

This man has proved very difficult to identify. Only three documents have been found relating to him, as follows:

1. His attestation for the Leicestershire Militia on 13th December 1879, aged 19 years 2 months. He was an unemployed rivetter, living at 99 Martin Street, St. Margaret’s, Leicester. He was given the service number 9101 in the militia. He was unable to sign his own name. He was 5ft 7in tall, with grey eyes, a fresh complexion and brown hair. Between 1880 and 1883 he undertook training and on 5th August 1883 he transferred to the 2nd Batallion of the Leicestershire Regiment as Private 669.

2. His embarkation record for Malabar, India on 27th November 1884, aged 24 years 10 months. His attestation date on this record is given as 15th August 1883 rather than the 5th August 1883. Henry was probably stationed with the 2nd Bn in Lucknow until he was posted to Burma.

3. UK Military Campaign and Medal Rolls. His service in Burma from 2nd January 1889 to 31st March 1889 and entitlement to the India General Service Medal with the Burma Clasp. What happened to Henry after March 1889 is unknown
